Canmore is a small town located west of Calgary about 125 KM in the mountains. Canmore is easily reachable from Calgary using your own car or you can take day trip to Canmore. Canmore has a lot to do year round. We love Canmore because it is easily accessible from Calgary and it is not a long and tiring drive.

The best thing about Canmore is, it has a visitor information center. Any time we go to mountains, we make sure to visit the center because we get up to date weather, trail and things to do information besides if there are any special events happening in the area. This place is just the beginning of the mountains and it is extremely beautiful. You don’t need a park pass to enter Canmore.

When you are in Banff or Yoho National Park, you need an entry pass. If you are not going there then you don’t need an entry pass making it a cheaper option to explore. With so many breath-taking views, trails and food options, Canmore is the “cheap and best option” if you don’t have plans to visit Banff.

From Canmore, Banff National Park is only 20 minute drive. If you are really short of time then it is a different thing, otherwise make sure to visit Canmore, Banff National Park, Yoho National Park and Jasper in a single trip. I would strongly recommend exploring a minimum of 2 destinations is the perfect plan. If you book in advance, you can easily get cheap hotels and if you are there, might as well do more in a single trip. This is the strategy I strongly recommend.

Getting there from Calgary:

Driving distance – 104 KM and it takes 1 hour 12 minutes commute. Here is link for the map to Canmore from Calgary.

The trail has 2 ways to go to the lake. An easy way and a difficult way. If you are just planning to go to the lake either option is good. If you have kids, be careful if you are on difficult route. It is not recommended (by us) with kids under the age of 6. Should you decide to take younger kids, please make sure to take extra care of them. No stroller allowed on difficult trail.

One good thing about difficult is that it is full of breathtaking views. You walk over a small fall. You climb on boulders. It is real fun to use the difficult way. If you are looking for adventure, fun, challenge, views and fresh water, difficult is the way for you.

The easy way is easy as the name suggests. Easy way is little short compared to difficult way.  If you are not a seasoned hiker then I strongly recommend use easy way if you are planning to go up the mountains after the Grassi Lake. Check this picture out for more.
